Living in North Carolina, I spend alot of time fishing on the outter banks and along the coast. Being on those little islands, puts me right in the target area of hurricane alley. There is no way to explain the lump one gets in his throat, and the pounding one has in his chest, when he finds that he has missed the evacuation alerts, all bridges are closed, and the ferries have stopped running. This all after learning the hurricane had picked up speed and would be in that night, rather than the next night. So I thought I'd put together some hurricane preperation information for those that visit my site. Just some basic hurricane season information for fishermen and outdoorsmen |

Many fishermen, outdoorsmen, and vacationers will head a few miles inland thinking they'll be safe from the brunt of the hurricane. The sad truth is sometimes the most damaging effects come as far inland as a state or two over. Some hurricaines are big enough to cover two or three states before degrading in strength. Inland flooding from hurricanes can come on very quickly, and take several days to run off. And tornadoes that feed off of the energy of a hurricane can cause major damage, injuries, and death. |

Needless to say, hurricane season can have a great impact on a fisherman and outdoorsman. The season starts right in the middle of fishing and vaction season and runs well into hunting season. So it is the prudent fisherman and outdoorsman, as well as the vacationer to stay aware of the storms brewing in the Atlantic and Pasific during the 2008 hurricane season. Somthing important to keep in mind is that when a hurricane begins it's landfall, emergency services; police, e.m.s., fire departments, and all other emergency services will not be able to respond until after the storm has passed. So before you decide to stay and ride out a storm in this 2008 hurricane season, be aware that you will be totally on your own until after the hurricane threat is over. Often long after, as phones and other communications, as well as the power, will most likely be inoperable. Evacuation orders, really should be heeded when a hurricane is aproaching. |
