Whitetail Deer TacticsFriday Oct. 17 2008The deer rut brings with it many opportunities. Yes, the rut is mating season, and the deer's senses are at their weakest. Whitetail bucks tend to be more active and venture out more often looking for does, and competing with other bucks for the doe's attention. This makes for prime hunting time, as that prized deer is more likely to be seen by hunters. Find areas where there are a lot of whitetail does, these areas are great for hunting prize whitetail bucks. Make sure you place yourself where you have good viability. The more hunting ground you see, the more likely you are to see a trophy buck. If he's out of range, work your way to him. The use of grunt calls is less effective during the rut, it just doesn't get the bucks attention. Try to put yourself in a position to intercept a rutting whitetail buck as he travels to his mating area. Key in on areas that the does use, one sexy doe can attract more than one buck. During this part of the hunting season, start early and stay in the forest for awhile.. Find the rub and scruff lines and put yourself there along them. Friday Oct. 10 2008 Staying unnoticed by the deer is, of course, very important to a successful hunting trip. It is important that the hunter keep his or her movements to the bare minimum, and he or she must make the least noise possible to avoid alerting the whitetail dear. But most important is the whitetail deer hunters scent. The scent is what, more often than not, gives the hunter away. You have very little control of your scent, and no control of the wind, so it is nessicery to try to stay downwind from any possible venison activity. The most valuable weapon nature has put in a whitetail's defensive arsenal is it's ability to pick up the slightest scent. Because man has a very distinct odor, a whitetail can pick up on a hunter presence very easily. Many products are available to the whitetail deer hunter now that can hide or cover the human scent. But these products can only do so much. There for it is still important to pay attention to wind direction while hunting deer or any other wild game. Wind direction can change, therefore a hunter must keep track of the wind direction. Even the slightest change of the gentlest of breezes can mean the difference in bringing home a trophy whitetail buck and going home with your head hanging and your tail between your legs. There are many ways to determine wind direction, some hunters use a butane lighter, others use a orderless powder that floats in the wind, while some tie a feather to their bow with floss. Practice and experimention will determine which method is best for you. Thursday Oct. 09 2008 Improvisation is a major key to whitetail deer hunting. Sometimes you can rattle and it seems not to be working, especially during the peak of the whitetail's rut. Bucks are busy during the rut chasing doe, and this slow hunting period can last a bit after the rut as the whitetail bucks are worn out from chasing the doe. I've experienced this many times in the past while deer hunting. Sometimes a doe would respond. I learned that the whitetail doe will respond to the sound of the antlers hoping a whitetail buck that was trailing her would be diverted by the battle that the rattling of my antlers was duplicating. Whitetail doe get chased a lot especially during the start of the rut, and this is how they cope. Once I learned this, I began waiting longer after I rattled. especially during and just after the peak of the deer rut. And most times every doe that straggled by after my rattle would soon be followed by a whitetail buck. I learned quick to stop rattling when the doe comes in or she may pin your location and take off, taking the buck with her. Wednesday Oct. 08 2008 Tips and tactics for adapting to the environment you are hunting for whitetail deer in. Some of the most important things a whitetail deer hunter needs to learn is tactics for adapting to the environment he is hunting in. No situation will be the same and you must adjust tactics for each situation on the fly while whitetail hunting. The deer adapt with the changes each day brings, and to be successful, the deer hunter must do the same. For example, it is common knowledge that deer tend to bed down in high winds. Which is true as the winds affect the whitetail's senses. It can't hear, smell, or see as well in high winds. But, even though they are bedded down, the deer's senses are on high alert. So the slightest thing might make them stand up. And such moments is something a whitetail deer hunter must have his senses alert for. In fact, many hunters avoid going whitetail hunting on windy days because of the notion the deer will be bedded down. But if you change your tactics, you can use the wind to your advantage and get closer to the game than you could on a calm quiet day. And being alert for the whitetail that stands up to investigate a noise or just to scope out his territory can give you a shot at the main ingredient for your whitetail deer stew. I know one hunter who I thought was nuts when on a windy day he would pull out his antlers, rattle, wait a bit, then move on and rattle in a different spot. This tactic works though, especially in thicker brush. It wasn't long after he started that day that he shot a beautiful whitetail buck. |
